Following the footsteps of the great philosopher
On the “Lietopi” peninsula, in the northeast of Halkidiki, are laying the ruins of the ancient city of Stagira. Between two hills, beside the sea and among idyllic beaches, the walls of the old city still stand. Here the philosopher Aristotle, a student of Plato and teacher of Alexander the Great, was born.
Come with us on this journey and discover the beauty of one of the most important trails in the world. It connects the area of “Aristotle’s alley” next to the tower of Mademois Agha, in today’s Stagira, with the ancient city remnants.
An enjoyable journey to follow with our bikes, making “stop” at important moments from the life and work of the great teacher, crossing the shady forest of beeches, chestnut trees and rare mountain herbs.

It’s going to be a long and full day, with many things to do and to see! So, let’s depart at 08.00 o’clock not to lose time! Get quickly in the comfortable Jeep and enjoy the ride and an introductory “speech” about Aristotle life and his legacy.
Soon we will reach the modern Stagira, a little village in the densely forested mountains of Halkidiki. Shortly after it, on a site with a great view to the bay of Ierissos and the Athonite peninsula, we reach the park built in memorial to Aristotle.
Here we will have one hour in our disposal to wander in between the interactive instruments and to reflect about Aristotle’s views posted on plates around the park.
Cycling the Aristotle’s Path
After this mind exercise, it is time to get into body work: Time for our cycling trip! Just 3 kilometers from the Park, on the highest point of the Path, you will get properly equipped and instructed for the descending route.
It will be a pleasant way down following a shaded forest road toward the sea. Some breaks for refreshment and for the breathtaking views are included in the program.
Here we are. At Ancient Stagira, the birth place of Aristotle. The small peninsula with ruins of old civilizations. All this, but also the sea, the forest and the whole surroundings transport us back into another time… a time where great philosophers where walking the Earth!
Enough time will be given to explore the area. You will see the Acropolis, the defensive walls, public buildings and, of course, the Aristotle’s burial monument.
Lunch and… swim!
It’s time for regaining some energy. On the foot of the Ancient Stagira are three idyllic bays with irresistible transparent waters. It’s the perfect opportunity to swim and get refreshed before lunch.
What about tasting fresh food on a decked area by the sea? Olimpiada, the fisher’s village located about 700m west of Ancient Stagira, is famous for its mussels. We will get them in the best restaurant of the seashore!
With our mind immersed in images of the day and a better understanding of the region and its history, we drive back to the starting point of our day. And now you will agree with us: a long and full day!
Return expectation time at 19:00pm.
*In case of bad weather, the tour won’t be cancelled, instead the programme will be adjusted.
