A trip back in time and in the imposing landscape of the “Holy rocks” of Meteora
According to a theory, the giant rocks of Meteora were created millions of years ago, when the area was still covered by sea.
What strikes us, though, is that, no matter how much we look into Greek mythology, we cannot find a single reference about this unique place.
The name Meteora is attributed to the founder of Great Meteor monastery, Saint Athanasios of Meteorite, who named Meteoros the wide stone, where he first ascended in 1344.
Nowadays, a few monks live in 7 of the 30 monasteries that originally were there, carrying on the tradition of worshipping God in this area.
On this short but full day, we are going to approach Meteora by our bikes for a brief trip back in time…

After getting to know each other briefly and settling administrative matters, we are going to depart for the city of Kalabaka at the foot of Meteora, following the highway under the shadow of Mount Olympus. If the mountain isn’t covered as usual by clouds, we will be able to admire “Zeus’ throne” and “Mytikas”, its two highest and distinctive peaks. When we arrive in Kalabaka, after about a three‑hour trip, we are going to drink coffee accompanied by a local snack overlooking the rocks. There, we are going to prepare our bicycles and equipment in order to start the cycling trip.
Our route will pass by, in the following order, the Monastery of St. Stephen, the Monastery of the Holy Trinity, the Monastery of Varlaam, the Monastery of Great Meteor, the Monastery of Rousanou and finally the Monastery of St. Nicholas.
We will have the chance to visit the interior of one of the Monasteries, based on their availability.
Upon completion of our visit, we are going to gather in the square of Kastraki village, where we are going to leave our bicycles and dine in a traditional tavern of the area.
We are going to return via Grevena city following the modern road of Egnatia motorway.
Our arrival in Thessaloniki is estimated between 20.00 and 21.00 hours.
*In case of bad weather, the tour won’t be cancelled, instead the programme will be adjusted.
