The routes of Halkidiki, and especially a “round of Halkidiki” is a reference point for all of us, the cyclists of this area.

It would be wise to deny the “tsipouro” that is going to be offered to us along the routes of this tour, and not to have a wine tasting in Porto Carras winery. For sure, though, we are going to swim at the most beautiful beaches, interrupting for a while the endless elevations and the rich terrain of this peninsula, until we are able to enjoy a cold beer on the porch of the guest house.

Along the way, you’ll experience Greek culture and traditions, village life and local charm, heartfelt hospitality (including lodging primarily in family-run inns), and the best of Greek wines and cuisine.

The support vehicle is going to transfer all our necessary belongings and make our effort more pleasant, or even help us complete this small achievement.

Of course, we are also going to make sure that our evenings, after the invigorating massage, are unique on this epic road tour.

PS: We thank Panagiotis Sotiriadis for the offered pictures.

Day 1:

Distance on bicycle: 90 km
Elevation on bicycle: Up 391m / Down 433m

We meet at 08.00 at “Αction bike club” for settlement of administrative matters, short briefing and getting to know each other.

You will also have the chance for a last bicycle check on Action bike club premises.

When we are sure that everything is ready, helmets on our heads, cold water, isotonic drinks and energy bars in the car, we are going to start cycling towards the first “finger” of Halkidiki.

The first day is going to be relaxed, suitable for warming up with a few elevations. We are going to cross the plain, through villages and endless cultivated areas of land. Then a brief stop in Nea Potidea canal, in order to see what the caique boats have fished, and to visit part of the old castle. At noon we are going to arrive at the quiet guest house “Dryades” with the beautiful view of sunset. We will have the chance to swim, to enjoy the treatments of our team’s masseur and the cordial hospitality, and to taste the local home made recipes of the excellent lady cook.

Day 2:

Distance on bicycle: 70 km
Elevation on bicycle: Up 1,266m / Down 1,282m

On the wide shady and pleasant porch of the guest house, we are going to ask Valadis to serve us the best he has for breakfast! Oats, of course, for those who love healthy diet, and… some rural eggs, home made jam and pie and fresh butter for the rest of us!

After a short briefing, we are going to hug Valadis and the lady cook, and after we clip our shoes in the pedals, full of new energy, we are going to roll down fast towards the small seaside villages, Fourka and Nea Skioni. Our destination is the beloved Porto Valitsa beach for a swim, food, or what everyone wants, and some rest.

Afterwards, we are going to cross the whole “finger” to the north, through crowded villages, holiday resortsa and beautiful beaches.

We have chosen “Petrino” guest house for our overnight, just outside Afytos village, with the intense traditional colour manifested in the architecture of the houses and its inhabitants’ culture .

Day 3:

Distance on bicycle: 80 km
Elevation on bicycle: Up 1,152m / Down 894m

We are sorry, but if someone in our company would like to stay under his sheets, we won’t let him! Nobody should miss the briefing and the breakfast! Today we are going to cycle on the second “finger”! One of our stops is going to be on the quiet Kalogria beach and we are looking forward to it. On our way, we are going to find gardens, that will supply us with fruit, and the last significant elevations of our route will be compensated by our late-evening destination, mountainous village Parthenonas. That’s where we are going to listen to the legend about the virgin queen who was kidnapped by pirates many years ago, and where we are going to let our gaze get lost on the magnificent nightfall and the Aegean sea.

The guest house where we are going to spend our night had been father Kyrillos’ house before he left the village in order to become a doctor. The landlady, though, is not going to leave us, and a marvellous meal is going to await us the following morning in order to give us strength for this day.

4

Day 4:

Distance on bicycle: 90 km
Elevation on bicycle: Up 2,510m / Down 2,806m

This is for sure the most difficult day of the whole tour! We believe that everybody is going to look for some rest in the car over the coarse of this day. Over 2,500 m of elevation in just 90 km of distance is going to test our sturdiness and strength.

We are going, however, to swim at the most beautiful beach of Halkidiki, Kavourotrypes, we are going to make a stop at the natural quiet harbour of Porto Koufo, and we are going to “fly” downhill before the small fishing village of Kalamitsi, in order to end up on the most beautiful side of Halkidiki, on the second “finger” opposite imposing Mount Athos. “Thalassokipos” is going to await us across Diaporos little island and our team’s masseur will have to show his best self.

Let’s not wast a minute!

5

Day 5:

Distance on bicycle: 63 km
Elevation on bicycle: Up 1,480m / Down 1,429m

The last day of our long cycling route. Without any heavy traffic on the roads, we are going to enjoy every minute and every pedalling that is going to take us to the refugee fishing village of Pyrgadikia, built amphitheatrically on top of ancient Piloros, it resembles Aegean villages.

Passing by Gomati village, if we meet Athonite Monk Father Anastasis, we are going to ask him to bless our trip and our return in the church of the village.

As we pass by the canal of Persian king Xerxes, we will imagine the thousands of soldiers dragging the heavy wooden ships in order to avoid the rough sea that had sunk his father’s fleet, 2,500 years ago on the edge of the “finger”, when he first tried to occupy Greece.

After a straight route of 5 km we are going to see Ouranoupolis, signifying the end of 5 difficult but also beautiful days by our bicycles on an epic tour! We are going to spend our last night in Xenia guest house, and maybe a small feast in a seaside tavern wouldn’t be a bad idea.

6

Day 6:

Distance on bicycle: 0km
Elevation on bicycle: Up 0m / Down 0m

Today is a day of relaxation and recovery! Our choices “lead” us either on a three‑hour cruise around Mount Athos for a short acquaintance with the monasteries and “Sketes” (i.e. isolated monastic communities) on its west side, or on the opposite uninhabited beautiful islands of Drenia, for a swim and sunbathe.
At noon, after lunch at a nearby seafood tavern (farewell meal) we are going to depart for Thessaloniki, following the route of mountainous Halkidiki, passing by small inland villages and the capital of the mountain, Arnea, with the famous for its exquisite quality honey. Our last stop, the small café of “Sogambros”, close to the top of Cholomontas mountain (honoured guest on Marco Polo travel guide).
Our arrival to Thessaloniki is estimated at about 20.00–21.00 o’ clock.

We wish you a nice trip!
